Increasing awareness of food waste in landfills keeps popping up as a topic.
The online magazine Environmental Leader published an interesting column Monday by Wayne Davis, co-founder of a company called Harvest Power. He points out that the United Kingdom is way behind countries like Germany in developing anaerobic digestion systems to handle food waste, but far ahead of the United States, which really lags behind both the UK and Europe in deploying this cutting edge technology.
Davis’ column is a good read, with plenty of good links and data. One eye opener: the EPA estimates the United States produced 541 million kWh of energy from farm-based anaerobic digestion in 2011. But the potential for growth is huge. The American Biogas Council estimates that the potential for AD from farms is 8.8 billion kWh, demonstrating how underutilized organic materials are on farms alone.
Check out Wayne’s column if you have the time. Food for thought, no pun intended.
