Materials Management Conversations in Maine
Uncategorized    ⁄  0 Comments

food waste compostingAs newcomers to the solid waste conversation both in Maine and more broadly, we’ve had a lot to learn about the organics landscape. The folks at the Maine Department of Environmental Protection have been exceedingly helpful throughout our initiation into the solid waste ‘club’.

Recently, we were invited to participate in a meeting of DEPs Materials Management Advisory Committee, which is working to make revisions to the state’s waste management and recycling plan. Put simply, the group is working on what to do with all of the solid waste Mainers produce, including food waste, which is a key component in anaerobic digestion systems like the one we developed at Exeter Agri-Energy. The plan is revised every five years, and we were thrilled to be invited to be part of the conversation.

What seems to be clear after just one meeting of the Materials Management Advisory Committee is that the solid waste landscape has changed quite significantly even over just the past five years. AD facilities, like the ones developed by Biogas Energy Partners, are a completely new kid on the block. We’re excited about where the technology is going, with AD and other waste-to-energy facilities, and are pleased to have supporters like the Maine DEP behind us.
