Iowa kids: “Stop dumping food waste in landfills”

Food waste needlessly takes up space in landfills; anaerobic digestion is one solution.

These three kids are way ahead of the curve! And they told the Iowa State Senate what needs to be done. Photo by William Petroski.

Biogas Energy Partners may have to hire these three guys as policy consultants. The Des Moines Register had this nice story last week about three young men who are concerned about the methane gas produced by food waste needlessly taking up space in landfills.

So the boys, 11, 12 and 13 years old, provided testimony to a subcommittee of the Iowa State Senate. They were part of a team of Iowa City youths that had conducted waste audits at two local restaurants, and discovered that only a small portion of waste in the restaurants’ trash bins should go to a landfill. About 75 percent turned out to be food waste that could have been composted or converted to energy.

We’ve been predicting for several months now that new environmental laws are coming, laws that will stop the pollution and wasted landfill space for which food waste is responsible. Certainly anaerobic digestion will be part of the solution, and the facility in Exeter, Maine can handle food waste on an industrial scale. It makes perfect sense to tackle and solve this problem, as the recent study by the Natural Resources Defense Council makes plain. A link to the study is available in this blog post.
